2019 Spink County Coalition Town Hall Meetings

spacerFor the 5th year, The Spink County Coalition hosted Town Hall meetings in the Spink County area. Three Town Hall meetings in Doland, Redfield, and Brentford focused on Opioid education, addiction, prevention, and treatment. Keynote speaker for the Doland and Redfield Town Hall meetings was Matt Walz, Keystone Treatment Center Representative, who gave a very informative presentation on Opioid identification, history, addiction, overdose, and treatment. Brentford Town Hall meeting hosts Dr. Melanie Weiss D.O., Vision of Hope, as the keynote speaker who shares her compelling personal story of Opioid addiction, hitting rock bottom, and rebuilding her life after addiction. Deputy Kathy Adams from the Spink County Sheriff's Office will present at all three Town Hall meetings to share what's trending in Spink County, and Dawn Oakley, Community Memorial Hospital and Spink County EMS, will present at all three meetings also to educate and demonstrate how Narcan/Naloxone is utilized in the case of an Opioid Overdose.

According to 2017 injury data by the National Safety Council, in America there is a higher probability of dying from an Opioid overdose than a motor-vehicle accident for the first time ever. https://injuryfacts.nsc.org/all-injuries/preventable-death-overview/odds-of-dying/. It is imperative that Spink County and South Dakota take a proactive, preventative stance on Opioid addiction to prevent an epidemic from flourishing like parts of our country has seen. The Town Hall meetings are a valuable asset to our County as we learn and grow together to create a strong, healthy community.

Odds of Dying - Injury Facts

For the first time on record, your odds of dying from an accidental opioid overdose are greater than dying in a motor-vehicle crash. Fear is natural and healthy.
